Julian Assange, the journalist who is currently imprisoned in London, has been awarded the 2020 Stuttgart Peace Prize. Assange is the founder of the whistleblower platform Wikileaks.
The award is linked to the appeal, “to not only protect, but to enforce, the right to unconditional freedom of information and freedom of the press” explained the Stuttgart association “Die Anstifter” (“The Instigators”), which awards the prize which comes with 5000 euros.

USA demand the extradition of Assange

Annette Ohme-Reinicke, chairwoman of the instigators, said in Stuttgart that the “sharp repression” against Assange was also directed against the realization of comprehensive political information for all. Assange has been imprisoned in London for more than a year. The USA is demanding his extradition for betrayal of secrets.

Presentation ceremony in December

As founder of the organisation Wikileaks, Assange had, among other things, published secret military documents. The presentation of the Stuttgart Peace Prize is planned for December 6th in the Stuttgart Theaterhaus.

Civil society citizen project

Die Anstifter describe themselves as coordinating various civil society projects and events in Stuttgart with a focus on tolerance, diversity and anti-fascist remembrance. Through the Stuttgart Peace Prize, the citizens’ project Die Anstifter is honouring people and projects that have made a special commitment to peace, justice and solidarity. The prize has been awarde annually since 2003.
